Mini Lesson: Say whaaaaaatt??

Happy Monday! Learn some common English expressions, expand your vocabulary, and turn your LANGUAGE ON!

Just because it’s a holiday and our intensive English classes are closed for the holiday doesn’t mean you can’t learn a little English. Read on to learn a few expressions related to speaking clearly and concisely!

to be straightforward / straight up / upfront

to say exactly what you want to say, to be honest

“Be straight up with me, do you like this dress or not?”

to beat around the bush

to not say exactly what you want to say, to “dance” around a subject

“Don’t beat around the bush! Can I invite him to the party, or not?”

to read somebody like a book

to see exactly what somebody’s intentions are

“Hey! How are you?”


“No you’re not. I can read you like a book. Tell me what’s wrong.”

to be a mind-reader.

to know what somebody wants with out any words being exchanged

“What do you want to eat?”


“Say it, spit it out, I’m not a mind-reader!”

“Ok, Greek food.”

Speak clearly

to speak without mumbling, to enunciate

“Sir, I can’t understand what you’re saying. Please, speak clearly.”
